Priority Areas

Bullseye

Eliminating School-to-Prison Pipeline

The school-to-prison pipeline is a process through which students are pushed out of schools and into prisons. It is a process of criminalizing youth that is carried out by disciplinary policies and practices within schools that put students into contact with law enforcement.

Whole-Student Education

Students are in need of an educational experience that addresses the need of the whole child. With more and more students experiencing a high number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) a new approach to education is necessary - one that requires social emotional learning, mental health counseling, and  behavior modification.

Embracing and Utilizing Culturally Relevant Practices

Culturally relevant practices are methods, procedures, process or rules used by educators that  value “the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant and effective for them” (Gay, 2013)

Acknowledging and Addressing "Education Debt"

According to Ladson-Billings, “education debt” is the combination of historical, moral, socio-political, and economic factors that has disproportionately affected African American, Latino, Asian, and other non-White students (Ladson- Billings, 2006). The disparity in academic performance between middle-class whites and other groups is correlated with education debt. Educational policies must be considered and applied in a manner that is appropriate to the debt that is owed.

Hearing the Voices of Current Educators

According to research by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the teacher shortage could reach 200,000 by 2025, up from 110,000 in 2018. This shortage of workers is due to a number of factors. Among them are pay, working conditions, lack of support, lack of autonomy, and ever-changing curriculum and students at high poverty schools are impacted the most. The COVID-19 pandemic and current political discourse has exasperated long-standing issues.
